to make the ancients speak we must feed them with our blood. faulkner doesn’t need his readers to bleed but he does insist on their absolute attention. once when told readers can’t understand him even after two or three reads, and asked what to do, he said “read it four times”. this is a 261 page book with 15 narrators and you will know them like people that cast a shadow and see the shadows they create.
